The strings are pulled taught and tuned to specific notes. Early psalteries were most often played by plucking the strings. The present form is usually played with a bow. Why Choose a Schoenhut for your child?

Schoenhut toy pianos are authentic musical instruments, built to endure the roughest of play. Small hammers strike metal rods, producing lovely chime-like tones from the lightest touch to forte. Unlike simple electronic keyboards having only one note source a Schoenhut toy piano plays full chords. Each piano is chromatically tuned, educating the ear of the young performer to the true values of musical notes and their combinations. Another point of merit is the correct spacing of keys which correspond to those on a full-sized piano, enabling a child to learn proper "finger stretch" required for playing. Each piano has one and one-half to three octaves (depending on the model) -- compared with seven and one-half on a regular piano.

One of Schoenhut's most ardent fans, Julliard-graduate Margaret Leng Tan, has won international acclaim for the concerts in which she performs using toy instruments. Ms. Tan has recorded entire albums using toy pianos custom-built for her by Schoenhut. "Anything you can play on the big piano, you can play on a toy", Ms. Tan told USA Today upon release of her CD "The Art of the Toy Piano" (Point Music).

Included with each Schoenhut Toy Piano is a Play-By-Color Learning System, designed to bring immediate success. A removable 37 key color-coordinated strip fits behind the keys to guide small fingers from chord to chord, and may be transferred to a larger piano as the child learns and grows. The corresponding Songbook contains a collection of familiar tunes.

Studies have documented the advantages of piano-playing at an early age, such as developing creative skills, enhancing motor skills, and promoting social interaction and self-esteem. Music is powerful in the way it touches hearts, soothes and motivates, in addition to being educational, inspirational, and just plain fun!

In Rochester, NY, the city where Schoenhut Toy Pianos were made up until 2000, Strong Museum features the company's rich and interesting heritage with an exhibit of miniature Schoenhut pianos. Their quality and durability distinguish them, says the curator of recreational artifacts at the Museum, where vintage Schoenhut pianos are displayed, along with dolls, circus figures, alphabet blocks, and other memorable toys from years gone by.

Look for the Schoenhut line in list form from the big button below. Whether for a birthday, holiday, Bat(r) Mitsvah, Christening, or any memorable occasion, a Schoenhut toy piano is sure to bring enjoyment to a child as well as an adult. One may become a family heirloom that will be a treasured keepsake to be passed on from generation to generation, or just another durable wood toy. All were made in USA up until 2004, now they vary, and recommended for ages 3 & up. More-
